International Vaasa

International Vaasa aspires to become a model for the internationalisation of the Ostrobothnia region. To achieve this end, we need to ensure well-functioning transport connections, education, multiculturalism and multilingualism, as well as expertise in information technology and environmental consciousness.

Versatile communications promote the prosperity of business, public administration, civic organisations and citizens. Vaasa's internationalisation objectives are:

  • to achieve increased value, equality and balanced regional development through co-operation, and by taking advantage of EU funding and other means
  • to take part in international co-operation projects
  • to increase the region’s visibility using marketing, which will also serve trade and industry

Through EU projects, local, regional and global networks are established. Participating in EU projects makes it possible to acquire competency, know-how and knowledge of internationalisation processes and to share the city’s own knowledge with others. Vaasa takes an active part in national and international networks and has a long town-twinning tradition.

Education in Vaasa is innovative and there is a desire to test new models. Language immersion (e.g. the Vasa Övningsskola IB section, which provides the opportunity to study for the IB-Diploma, and the study programmes provided within vocational education in foreign languages) is a form of education that represents practical internationalisation at its best. Within the City’s administration, international activities are decentralised. The directors of the administrative boards are responsible for the international relations and activities within their own board.
