Apply now for an early childhood education and care place for next spring

Published: 21.10.2026

If your child does not yet have an early childhood education and care (ECEC) place, but you already know that you will need one in January 2027 because of a parent’s or guardian’s work or studies, apply now – by the end of October! You should also apply now if you would like your child to transfer to a different ECEC unit.

This helps ECEC staff plan ahead and take families’ wishes into account when allocating ECEC places.

Apply for an ECEC place for your child

In Vaasa, you can apply for an ECEC place at any time of the year, according to your family’s needs. However, if your family already knows that you will need an ECEC place in the spring, we ask you to submit your application for a new place by 31 October.

– The more applications we receive in good time for the spring, the better we can plan our activities and, for example, adjust the composition of the groups if necessary, says Maria Karvonen, Service Manager.

Include several ECEC preferences in your application

Karvonen advises parents to make use of the option to list more than one ECEC unit that would suit their family.

– The application allows you to list three preferred ECEC units, and I definitely recommend using all three options. In some areas, such as the city centre, there is more demand for ECEC places, so it is always a good idea to list more than one option.

Family day care across Vaasa

In addition to daycare centres, Vaasa also has family daycare providers. They provide daycare in their own homes, where they look after up to four children under school age.

All family daycare providers are employed by the City of Vaasa and have either a vocational qualification in family daycare or some other qualification in childcare and education.

  • Family daycare in Finnish is available in the following areas: Asevelikylä, Gerby, Kotiranta, Melaniemi, Merikaarto, Pukinjärvi, Ristinummi, Suvilahti, Teeriniemi, Tervajoki, Old Vaasa, Vetokangas.
  • Family daycare in Swedish is available in Gerby and the city centre.

ECEC Services use the Edlevo App

The City of Vaasa’s Early Childhood Education and Care Services use an app called Edlevo.

Edlevo is a free digital service that parents or guardians and ECEC providers in Vaasa can use to manage matters related to early childhood education and care. Edlevo can be used on both mobile devices and in a web browser.

Applications for early childhood education and care (childcare application) are submitted through Edlevo. Parents or guardians also use Edlevo to accept the ECEC place offered to their child and receive decisions electronically through the app.
