EU Ambassadors Visit Vaasa to Explore Energy Expertise and European Cooperation
Published: 8.5.2026
EU ambassadors gathered in Vaasa for a two-day retreat under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, exploring how strong regional innovation ecosystems—exemplified by the city’s energy cluster—can support Europe’s goals in sustainability, competitiveness, and technological development.
In April, the City of Vaasa hosted ambassadors of the European Union for a two-day retreat organised under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The visit was jointly hosted by the City of Vaasa and the Embassy of Cyprus in Helsinki and brought together EU ambassadors accredited to Finland, representatives of EU institutions, and officials from the Finnish government.
The retreat focused on how strong regional ecosystems can contribute to common European goals in sustainability, competitiveness, and technological development.
Vaasa was a natural choice for the visit. The region is internationally recognised for its concentration of energy technology companies, research organisations, and higher education institutions. Together, these actors form a closely connected ecosystem developing solutions in energy efficiency, electrification, automation, and sustainable energy systems that are used worldwide.
The programme aligned well with the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency, including economic resilience, strategic autonomy, and sustainable growth. The visit highlighted how regional strengths can support broader EU objectives and demonstrate the importance of innovation across Europe.

Upon arrival in Vaasa, a working luncheon hosted by the Ambassador of Cyprus to Finland, Demetris Samuel, provided an opportunity for discussion. Finland’s Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering, Joakim Strand, also participated, emphasising the national relevance of the visit. Ambassador Samuel highlighted the importance of regional innovation hubs in advancing Europe’s long-term objectives, pointing to Vaasa as an example of how strong public-private cooperation and export-driven industry can support both competitiveness and sustainability.
Exploring the Energy Vaasa Ecosystem
A central element of the visit was the EnergyVaasa cluster, which brings together more than 180 companies working in energy technology, smart grids, automation, and electrical engineering. Ambassadors also visited the University of Vaasa campus. In Vaasa all higher education institutions cooperate enabling interdisciplinary cooperation and strong links to industry. At Technobothnia, a shared research and development environment the ambassadors gained insights into how research supports innovation, education, and industrial development.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Wärtsilä Sustainable Technology Hub. Wärtsilä, a key company within the Vaasa energy ecosystem, presented solutions related to sustainable propulsion, energy storage, and integrated power systems, illustrating how industrial innovation contributes to emissions reductions and EU climate objectives.
In addition to the formal programme, the visit included opportunities for informal exchange. Mayor Tomas Häyry hosted an evening event, emphasizing the value of direct dialogue between European decision-makers and regional actors.

Overall, the EU ambassadors’ retreat in Vaasa demonstrated how European ambitions are supported by strong regional ecosystems. By showcasing close cooperation between industry, education, and research, Vaasa illustrated how sustainability, economic growth, and innovation can advance together—providing practical inspiration for Europe’s shared future.
