Gym club launched in response to students’ wishes
Published: 17.9.2026
At Merenkurkku Lower Secondary School, students’ interest for gym training inspired the launch of a new after-school club. The supervised gym club, launched as part of a leisure activity try-out, helps lower the threshold for young people to get active while supporting their overall wellbeing.
The Vaasa model for leisure activities supports the wellbeing of children and young people by giving them the opportunity to take part in a fun, free hobby as part of their school day.
Activities vary from school to school, and each school’s activity programme is shaped by the interests and wishes of its pupils.
More than 80 per cent of pupils at Merenkurkku School responded to the national student survey in 2024. According to the results, going to the gym was the most popular leisure activity.
A free activity right after school
In response to students’ wishes, the school launched a trial gym club last autumn. The club is free of charge and open to all pupils. The activity will continue this autumn as a permanent part of the school’s after-school activity programme.
The club meets straight after the school day at the gym in Vaasa Swimming Hall, which is located close to the school.
The gym club is led by Mia Valkeakari, who is a school coach at Merenkurkku School and a qualified personal trainer.
– This is a safe, well-supervised and accessible way for young people to get started with gym training. The club lasts for an hour, and I’m there the whole time to supervise, demonstrate the correct techniques and show students how to use the equipment, says Valkeakari.
Training, wellbeing and new friends
The club welcomes everyone, from beginners to more experienced gym-goers. No previous experience of gym-training is required. The club has attracted both girls and boys from Years 7 to 9.
– Everyone is welcome, whether on their own or with a friend. The club has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and we have a lot of fun together too! Some students have even made new friends through the club, says Valkeakari.
At the club, students learn how to plan training programmes that suit their individual needs. They also discuss the importance of nutrition and sleep for wellbeing and recovery. Together, they have learned how to use the gym equipment safely and explored the types of training that best suit their age and fitness level.
