European Parliament Elections 2024

The European Parliament is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union. EU citizens elect its members through direct elections held in all member states every five years. The elections choose members of the European Parliament from all EU member states.

The 2024 European Parliament elections will be held in Finland on Sunday, June 9, 2024. Early voting in Finland will take place from May 29 to June 4, 2024. Early voting abroad will take place from May 29 to June 1, 2024.

Right to vote

In the European Parliament elections held in Finland, entitled to vote are all 18-year-olds (age reached no later than on the day of the election) who are:

Finnish citizens, regardless of place of residence

or

Citizens of another EU member state who have not lost their right to vote in their home country and who have registered as a voter with the Digital and Data Services Agency in Finland no later than 80 days before the election day

and

whose municipality of residence is in Finland on the 51st day before the election day

or

who is employed by an EU institution or an international organisation operating in Finland or is a family member of such a person living in Finland.

An eligible voter can only vote in one EU member state in the same European Parliament elections, either in their home country or in the country where they reside.

A Finnish citizen who has registered as a voter in another EU member state’s European Parliament elections within the prescribed deadline is not eligible to vote in the Finnish European Parliament elections.

Candidates

The eligibility requirements for European Parliament elections are the same as those for parliamentary elections. Eligible candidates for election are:

1) every Finnish citizen with the right to vote in the elections and who is not legally incompetent

and

2) every eligible voter who is a citizen of a European Union member state, who has registered and been included in the voter register in Finland, and who has not lost their eligibility to stand for election in their home country’s elections.

In European Parliament elections, Finland constitutes a single electoral district. This means that candidates stand for election throughout the country, and voters can vote for any candidate. However, votes cast in European Parliament elections are initially counted by electoral district, after which the Helsinki Electoral District Committee consolidates the results of all districts into the overall result for the country.

The candidates will be published on the Ministry of Justice’s Information and Result Service on May 10, 2024.

Home Voting and Institutional Voting

A person whose ability to move and act is so limited that they cannot go to a polling station or an advance polling station without unreasonable difficulty may vote in advance at home. When voting at home, the eligible voter’s caregiver living in the same household can also vote.

The notification must be made no later than Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 16.00
by calling 06 325 1550 (Mon–Thu, 9:00–16:00 and Fri, 9:00–15:00)
or by email to kotiaanestys@vaasa.fi.

The conduct of voting in advance in institutions will be notified to the institutions separately. Eligible voters can inquire about the timing of voting from the institution’s staff.

Results

The preliminary results of the elections will be available already on the evening of election day.

After the polling stations close at 20:00, the results of the early voting entered into the election information system will be made public. After that, the preliminary calculations of the electoral district committees will be transferred to the election information system as they are completed on the evening of the election day.

Usually, the preliminary results are fully available by 23:00 at the latest. In the largest electoral districts, especially in the Uusimaa electoral district, obtaining the preliminary results may take longer.

The Electoral District Committee will confirm the entire result of the elections in the electoral district at its meeting held on the Wednesday following the election day, starting no later than 18:00, and issue credentials to the elected Members of the European Parliament.

The election results can be viewed on the Ministry of Justice’s Information and Result Service.

What does the European Parliament do?

European voters elect Members of the European Parliament via direct election every five years. Thus, the European Parliament represents the citizens of the EU. The Parliament, along with the EU Council, is one of the EU’s most important legislative bodies.

The European Parliament has three main tasks:

  • The Parliament discusses EU legislative initiatives and adopts regulations together with the Council of the EU.
  • It supervises the Commission and other EU institutions and ensures they operate democratically.
  • It discusses the EU budget and establishes it together with the Council.

The number of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) elected from each EU country is proportional to the country’s population. In 2024, 720 MEPs will be elected, including 15 from Finland. Previously, Finland had 14 MEPs out of the Parliament’s 705 members.
