VASKILUOTO COMPONENT MASTER PLAN 2040

The component master plan covers the Vaskiluoto area, a total area of about 5 km2, of which about 2,5 km2 is water. The goal of the planning is, among other things, to utilize the possibilities and potential of Vaskiluoto as a part of Vaasa and the Vaasa region, to create prerequisites for an area city centre in Vaskiluoto as well as to reconcile various interests and uses in the area.

The main goal of the component master plan can be considered to be the development of Vaskiluoto as a unified area and as a part of the Vaasa city area through consolidating various interests and end user goals in the area. The versatile functions in the area, such as dwelling (both current and new), recreation, tourism, industry, workplaces, service as well as sea port activity should be secured at the same time as development needs should be considered as the land use evolves. Prerequisites for a Vaskiluoto area city center also need to be created and the identity of the island needs to be identified and strengthened.

An important goal is to consider and consolidate the need to develop traffic and road network affecting the island with consideration to various types of transport as well as securing accessibility to Vaskiluoto. The needs of both local as well as national and international traffic should be considered in the component master plan. The local pedestrian-, bicycle- and public transport should be consolidated with car traffic through the area, transports of goods and rail traffic. The goal is to structure the traffic network and securing functioning traffic communications. In addition, shipping and boat traffic is of great importance in the area and the development of the seaport and its needs should be considered.

In the development of the component master plan, the master plan for Vaasa 2030 is adjusted in regards to the area of concern. The component master plan is developed as an area reservation plan with legal effect.

A planning decision for the development of the Vaskiluoto component master plan was made 9. October 2018 and a draft was presented July-August 2019. Based on the feedback, a new draft will be developed and hopefully presented during the autumn of 2020. The goal is a finished plan during 2021.
