Applying for a place
Applying for a place
A place at an early childhood education centre should be applied for no later than four months before the need for care arises or immediately when you become aware of the need for care.
If you would like to apply for a place for your child in a municipal or private daycare centre, family daycare or an open daycare club, please fill out our application online.
If you do not have a Finnish social security number, please contact the service coordination. Please do not enter the social security number in the message for data security reasons.
- When applying for a place in a municipal daycare centre or family daycare, fill out the following: Hakemus kunnalliseen varhaiskasvatukseen (Application for municipal early childhood education)
- When Applying for a place in a private daycare centre, fill out the following: Palvelusetelihakemus yksityiseen varhaiskasvatukseen (Application for a service voucher for private early childhood education)
- If your family lives outside Vaasa, you can still apply for early childhood education in Vaasa. These applications will be processed on a case-by-case basis. In this event, contact the early childhood education Service Manager Maria Karvonen by email: firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone: 050 325 4821.

Fill in the application form in english and send it to email@example.com
The application must state the service needed and the date when the early childhood education is expected to begin. Three location requests can be entered in the application. Where possible, the location of the early childhood education will be according to the family’s primary wish.
The decision on the location is made about three weeks before care begins
The family is contacted about a month before the desired start of early childhood education and their need for early childhood education is reconfirmed.
The decision on the location where the early childhood education will be is given to the family about three weeks before it starts. Once a decision has been made, the start date for early childhood education can no longer be changed.
An application for a place at an early childhood education centre is valid for one year. Children in Vaasa, whose mother tongue is Finnish, can apply for a Swedish-language immersion programme. Applications for language immersion programmes are made using our online service in January-February each year.
Sudden and unforeseen need for a place in an early childhood education centre
If the need for early childhood education comes suddenly, is unforeseen and is due to employment, study or education, the application for a place should be made as soon as possible.
However, the application must be completed at least two weeks before the desired start of early childhood education. Information on sudden employment or the commencement of studies must be provided in writing. It is a good idea for the family to be prepared for the fact that the place for early childhood education may not meet their primary wish.
Changing the day care place (unit transfer)
The application for a place of early childhood education will be removed from the City of Vaasa information system when the child gets a place in early childhood education and care. This is the case even if the place granted does not correspond to the wishes of the guardians. The guardians cannot agree with the head of the unit or staff, for example, that an application submitted to the desired unit would remain in force.
If guardians wish to apply for a transfer to the unit / change the child´s early childhood education centre, a so-called transfer application must be submitted. This is done in the early childhood education and care e-services. Select “Application for Early Childhood Education” and “Change of care” (“Unit transfer”) as the application type.
The transfer application will be valid for one year. If the guardians wish to withdraw the transfer application, please contact the early childhood education and care service coordination (‘palveluohjaus’).
Transfer decisions are made as places in early childhood education and care become vacant. As a rule, transfers will take place in August at the start of the new year of operations. When there is a vacancy in the desired unit, the daycare manager/family daycare supervisor will contact the guardians. The transfer to a new unit will not necessarily take place at the time desired by the guardians.

Termination or temporarily suspension of a place
Termination of a place
The parents must notify the child’s early childhood education centre in writing that the care relationship will end. The notification must be made at least one month before the care relationship ends.
Temporarily suspension of a place
Parents may, if they wish, suspend their child’s place at an early childhood education centre for a limited period, provided that the child has been there for at least four months.
After the suspension, the child may return to the same early childhood education centre. The suspension shall last for a minimum of four months and a maximum of one year.
The start of the suspension and the time limit shall be agreed with the daycare provider in advance. No client fee is charged during the period of suspension.
During this period, a child under the age of 3 is entitled to a home care allowance and a child under school age is entitled to the sibling increase of the basic amount. If the suspension ends after September, the family will not be entitled to a free July month the following summer.
Change in the need for early childhood education
Your child’s need for early childhood education is defined when early childhood education begins.
If there is a change in what is required, i.e. more or fewer early childhood education hours, the change should be agreed directly with the daycare manager or family daycare supervisor.
It is a good idea to discuss changes early, at least one month before a desired change. A new service requirement must be valid for at least five months.
