2/2022 Vaasan kaupunki hiilineutraaliksi 202X - IoT-alustan luominen: investointihaku

his project is essentially related to the group project R-00016 ”Making the city of Vaasa carbon-neutral by 202X – Creating an IoT platform: real-time monitoring, testing, and development,” where Vaasa University is being switched as the main implementer instead of the city of Vaasa.

The co-implementers of that project are the city of Vaasa, Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), Åbo Akademi, and Novia. The project concerns the research, construction, and evaluation of the planned IoT data platform (Internet of Things), as well as related measures and factors such as architecture, data sources, necessary hardware, reliability, integration with other technologies and applications, data security, stakeholders, data storage, ownership, and visualization (dashboard view), among others. In this project, the city acquires the essential equipment and software for the development project.

One of the main goals of Vaasa’s strategy is to achieve carbon neutrality before 2030. Real time monitoring of emission development and the ability to respond quickly to the necessary measures are essential prerequisites for achieving the carbon neutrality target and planning the required climate measures. This supports decision-making, helps target measures and monitor results, and improves cost-effectiveness. Real-time monitoring requires the design, acquisition, and readiness for continuous development of a digital IoT data platform. Together with intelligent sensor technology, edge computing & AI, and existing digital applications and technologies in the city, the IoT platform collects, analyzes, and visually models relevant information for city
measures. This information can be used, among other things, for planning, project operations, decision-making, communication, procurement, and stakeholder engagement.

This investment project acquires an IoT data platform, related edge computing devices, various sensors, and peripherals and supplies. The data platform and any other necessary software are acquired as a service, and the equipment will be mainly owned by the city. The IoT data platform is an essential part of digital smart city development and achieving sustainable development goals, along with other Industry 4.0 development factors (such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, big data, autonomous systems, and robotics). Edge AI refers to the combination of edge computing and AI. Artificial intelligence processes data as close to the data source as possible, either directly on the device or on a nearby server. Through the IoT
platform, a shared data repository can be produced for the city ecosystem (city organization, stakeholders, residents), with the content defined separately for each stakeholder according to their needs, strengthening stakeholder engagement. Modern city infrastructure offers many different data sources whose data can be optimized in real-time and through the IoT platform (such as energy and energy applications, buildings, transportation, and location infrastructure, weather, climate, and emissions).
